Old Line Plate blogger and author Kara Mae Harris talks about gathering recipes (and human stories) from community cookbooks, and how the state's culinary traditions—from Maryland fried chicken to Baltimore peach cake—are being carried forward, continuously evolving along the way.
Kara Mae Harris started Old Line Plate as a blog and is now the author of two cookbooks filled with recipes and stories related to Maryland's culinary traditions. She talks to Spike about the people behind the recipes in community cookbooks, her approach to testing recipes, how traditions are being passed on while evolving, and the many strong opinions and emotions around what an "authentic" Maryland crab cake really is.
Recorded in front of a live audience at Woodberry Kitchen in Baltimore, Maryland on November 12, 2025.
