Soil Health & Stewardship

Episode Summary

A conversation about the intersection of farming, land stewardship, and faith, with Tommy Shireman of Third Way Farm.

Episode Notes

At Third Way Farm in Havre de Grace, Maryland, Tommy and Michelle Shireman's model for regenerative farming goes deep on every front. In this episode, Tommy talks to Spike about how climate change initially motivated him to farm and how he applies advanced ecological methods like no-till vegetable farming and woodland pig production to grow healthy soil and food.

Spike and Tommy also get into the broader philosophy behind his approach, including his personal exploration of how theology intersects with ecology, the Biblical concept of dominion as it relates to land stewardship, and how he interprets Jesus' teachings as a call to actively challenge systems (including food systems) of violence and oppression.
