The State of Farming

Episode Summary

Before serving in Governor Wes Moore’s administration, Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks helped build and strengthen local and regional food economies in the Mid-Atlantic. In this episode, he talks about how blackberries—and then wine—kickstarted his initial interest in farming. Then, Spike and Secretary Atticks dig into the many challenges facing Maryland’s farmers and eaters—from climate change to land access to the health of the Chesapeake Bay—and the ways in which direct relationships between farms and the people they feed can contribute to a more resilient system.
